The UNF Eco Adventure and Wildlife Sanctuary office supports the University's objectives by offering experiences that cultivate awareness of the natural world. We are conscious people in nature understanding the value of a healthy environment.
The Wildlife Sanctuary consists of seven different fresh water habitats in 365 acres and includes the Robert Loftin Nature Trails, which are listed on the USA National Trail Registry System. These trails are for low impact recreation such as running, hiking and bird watching. An exercise loop trail is located in this area, as well as fishing and picnic tables. The Sanctuary offers ranger guided field trips and hands on workshops for school groups ages k-12 and also civic groups such as Boy Scouts and garden clubs. All programs are written to comply with Sunshine State standards. These programs teach about local plants, animals and fresh water habitats.
The John M. Golden Environmental Education Pavilion is a rustic 1500sq. ft. facility that is open daily for viewing of environmental displays and also available to student groups and organizations for meetings and programs. The facility was named in honor of UNF’s first Chief Ranger, John Golden who initiated and implemented the environmental programs now offered in the Wildlife Sanctuary.
UNF Student Government provides funding for the Eco Adventure Program which is open to students free of charge. Students can check out camping gear such as tents, sleeping bags, kayaks, canoes and surfboards. We are always adding gear to fit the interests of the students. Eco Adventure leaders plan and lead overnight and day wilderness trips which feature hiking, kayaking, canoeing and white water rafting trips.
