iREAD Graphic Novels is a summer camp designed to bring literature to life and motivate students who are deaf and struggling readers. This camp will also strengthen the teaching skills of pre-service teachers enrolled in either Childhood/Literacy or Deaf Education.
This summer, iRead Graphic Novels is a FREE camp to all students entering 3rd grade through those exiting the 8th grade. Funds for the camp were graciously provided by the Dean's Education Advisory Council.
Date: July 8-12th, 2013

The iREAD Graphic Novels summer camp will impact UNF pre-service teachers, students who are D/HH, as well as their families, and potentially the surrounding community. Research has shown that graphic novels have a significant impact on the motivation and learning of students who are D/HH struggling readers. Students who are D/HH will benefit from iREAD camp by having the opportunity to extensively interact with graphic novels both in hard copy and electronic format (stored on iPads). Most importantly, the camp participants will engage in activities that promote and develop reading skills while using graphic novels.
Families will be invited to attend a performance and presentation on the last day of camp. Parents may benefit from having their students attend iREAD camp because they will realize alternative genres of literature that are of high interest and motivational to their students. On the greatest scale, iREAD camp has the potential to impact the surrounding community. Anytime students who are D/HH improve their reading skills, their opportunities to succeed academically and socially increase.
