Advanced ASL Proficiency (3 credit hours)This course is designed to refine expressive and receptive ASL skills and continue development of grammatical and linguistic structure of ASL in conversation. Emphasis is placed on visualization in storytelling and self-expression in dialogues.Interpreting and Transliterating Process (3 credit hours)This course uses a process-oriented approach for applying the essential cognitive strategies to interpretation. These strategies include readily retrieving lexical items, organizing and manipulating visual images, analyzing message for meaning, and self-monitoring for message accuracy. The course serves as a transition from language learning to simultaneous manipulation of ASL and English for the purposes of interpreting and transliterating.Interpreting Process and Skill Development I (3 credit hours)This course applies the processes of interpretation and transliteration theory to components of the overall task of interpreting. Implementing language transfer strategies between ASL and English and improving message transfer to diverse populations are central to the course. Emphasis is placed on the student's ability to apply interpretation theory to production of messages in the target language that reflect maximum fidelity to the source text.Interpreting Process and Skill Development II (3 credit hours)This course is designed to develop a deeper understanding of the interpreting process and the development of advanced competencies in interpreting and transliterating. The course utilizes interactive discussions, small group practice, and hands-on learning activities to further application of interpretation theory. Emphasis is placed on consecutive interpreting in mental health and medical settingsAdvanced Interpreting Process and Skill Development I (3 credit hours)This course is designed to develop advanced linguistic and bicultural competence in interpreting and transliterating along the continuum from Signed English to ASL. This course utilizes interactive discussions, small group practice, and hands-on learning activities to further application of interpretation theory. Emphasis is placed on simultaneous interpreting in a variety of settings.Advanced Interpreting Process and Skill Development II (3 credit hours)This course is designed to develop advanced competencies in interpreting and transliterating in highly specialized and complicated settings. The course utilizes interactive discussions, small group practice, and hands-on learning activities to further application of interpretation theory. Emphasis is placed on interpreting in legal and other high-risk settings.Ethical Decision-Making for Interpreters (3 credit hours)This course examines professional codes of ethics and conduct that govern professions and discusses how they contribute to the process of ethical decision-making. Students will examine the RID Code of Professional Conduct in depth and apply its tenets to real-world, interpreting scenarios through online discussions and activities. Through case studies and cooperative learning, students will enhance their ability to make ethical decisions as sign language interpreters.Interpreting Assessment Preparation (3 credit hours)This course is a practice-oriented skill enhancement course. Through hands-on practice and simulated interpreting situations in medical, social service, financial settings, students will integrate the skills outlined in the National Interpreter Certification process. Students will practice the skills defined by the National Council on Interpreting. Focus will be on the application of the skills set to the process of interpreting and preparation for the NIC Interview-Performance test.Interpreting Skills Lab (3 credit hours)This course is a hands-on, interactive course that will provide opportunity for practice of interpreting through onsite class meetings and mentorship with external community interpreters. Progress towards mastering the competencies outlined by the National Council on Interpreting will be monitored.Interpreting for Diverse Populations (3 credit hours)This course will explore interpreting for individuals from diverse racial, ethnic, cultural, economic, religious, and social backgrounds. Students will identify the role and function of interpreters when working with these populations and assimilate methods for applying cultural and linguistic competence to a variety of settings.Applied Research in Interpreting (3 credit hours)This course introduces students to current research in the field of spoken and signed language interpreting and to conceptualizing research projects in related topic areas of personal interest. Students are initially exposed to human subject review procedures at the university and will undergo the necessary training and certification to proceed with research design. Students are mentored through topic investigation, problem identification, research design, and literature review. The goal of the course is to demonstrate to students the benefit of active research in ones pursuit of excellence as an interpreter. Research projects may lead to data collection, manuscript preparation, publication and presentation.Service Learning in the Deaf Community (3credit hours)This course is designed to strengthen the student's ability to acculturate to the rich linguistic and cultural characteristics of the Deaf Community through civic engagement. Faculty will mentor students in designing a service-learning project that is responsive to community need and is adequately reflected upon through journaling.Service Learning with Deaf Children (3 credit hours)This course is designed to introduce students to the needs of Deaf children through civic engagement. Faculty will mentor students in designing a service-learning project that is responsive to children in 0-21 learning environments and is adequately reflected upon through journaling.Practicum (3 credit hours)This course is field-based and requires observation and mentored experiences in the field as an interpreter. Through the practicum, students have ongoing opportunities to apply classroom learning and theory with real-world interpreting. This course requires 100 hours of field-based experiences.Internship (6 credit hours)Prerequisite: All program courses or permission of program director.This course is field-based and requires supervised, mentored experiences with a certified interpreter. Through internship, students have ongoing opportunities to apply classroom learning and theory with real-world interpreting. This course requires 200 hours of field-based experience.
