Scholarship/Fellowship Application Checklist
Scholarship: a sum of money or other aid granted to an undergraduate student because of merit, need, etc. to pursue his or her studies.
Fellowship: a sum of money or other aid granted to a graduate student because of merit, need, etc. to pursue his or her studies.
- Carefully review any special application criteria for each individual scholarship/fellowship or award you are interested in.
- Make sure your completed application materials meet the requirements for each individual award you wish to be considered for.
- Acrobat Reader is required to complete the application. If you don’t have access to a computer, Acrobat Reader, or a scanner, the ITS Help Desk is a good resource.
- Scholarship, fellowship and award recipients may be asked to submit original documents once they’ve been selected. This includes, but is not limited to, original letters of recommendation, official documentation to verify years of experience, etc.
- Scholarship/fellowship application (includes essay)
a. Complete, sign and date the application.
b. The essay is a required part of the application.
- Essays are limited to three double-spaced pages and must be typed. Minimum font size: 11 point. Handwritten essays will not be considered. Essays must be dated and include applicant’s name (essay form is a part of the application form).
- Essay should describe how you will benefit from the scholarship or fellowship.
- Only one essay is required but it must include any information required by individual scholarships/fellowships you wish to be considered for.
Example: there are some scholarships/fellowships for teachers who wish to teach in urban schools. These awards may require that your essay contains information about why you wish to teach in an urban school.
c. Essay tips: Other than the information mentioned in the above guidelines,there are no specific topical requirements for the essay. This is your opportunity to let the selection committee know a little bit about who you are as well as your goals for the future. Student essays in the past have touched on topics such as:
- Their proudest achievement
- The toughest obstacle they’ve experienced or are experiencing
- Why they chose their major or current area of study
- Their goals once they receive their degree

2. Two professional letters of recommendation
a. All recommendation letters must be:
- Printed on official letterhead
- Dated within 12 months of your application
b. Give working professionals as much lead time as possible to write your letter of recommendation, as they have numerous demands on their time. Requesting reference letters at the last minute may result in your inability to have the required letters prior to the application deadline.
3. Resume or Curriculum Vitae (not to exceed 4 pages) including educational qualifications, work experience, teaching experience, leadership positions held and professional activities.
4. Official Transcripts for students not currently enrolled at the University of North Florida. Please scan and send as an e-mail attachment with the other application materials.
Submitting Your Application
- Applications, letters of recommendation, resumes & other required documentation must be submitted together as attachments or scanned attachments in ONE e-mail. Applications, reference letters and other original or signed documents should be scanned and attached. (Scholarship, fellowship and award recipients may be asked to submit original documents once they’ve been selected.)
- E-mail subject line should include your full name and the type of award you are applying for. Examples:
- Scholarship application - John Doe
- Fellowship application - John Doe
