EDG 3991 Employability Skills and Career Success

Course Description:

  • This course focuses on instructional methods, materials and curricula to introduce students to the fundamentals of planning, organizing and implementing a comprehensive job search campaign.  Emphasis is placed on identification of individual career goals, assessments of skills and abilities, exploration of career options, analysis of the job market, and effective use of employment search tools (e.g. resumes, cover letters, interviewing, networking, and management of career pathways and resources.   Discussion and debate are encouraged and includes presentations by Career Services Professionals, Recruiters and Employer Representatives, and Graduate School Admissions Representatives.   This course is focused on helping undergraduate students to successfully implement their career plans.   

    Why is The Course Needed?

  • To design a job search strategy that gets results, you must know what you want to do. What type of job tasks or job titles do you want to pursue? Which industries, organizations, and departments are you targeting?  Your education, skills, experience, knowledge, interests, and enthusiasm are factors to consider.  Today’s job market has become very competitive with employers receiving hundreds of resumes for even entry level positions.  To be marketable to employers, students must develop the skills needed to present their qualifications effectively on paper and in interviews.  This course helps students utilize a variety of job search strategies that will give them a competitive edge and make a successful transition from academics to the world of work.       

    Course Goals 

    • Gain insight into skills and abilities as they relate to the world of work
    • Use a variety of information resources to explore career options
    • Develop employability skills necessary for a successful job search (i.e. resume writing, interviewing, job hunting, networking, cover letter writing).
    • Understand Occupational Trends and the changing world of work.  
    • Develop team, leadership, and presentation skills
    • Appreciate diversity and communicate across cultures and generations
    • Prepare students with a variety of skills for a fast-changing workplace
