What should I do if I am sexually assaulted?

  • Find a safe place.

  • Decide if you want to report the crime to the police.

  • Try to preserve physical evidence. Do not shower, bathe, douche, eat, drink or brush your teeth. Avoid washing the clothing you where wearing when assaulted. Place them in a paper bag.

  • Contact a crisis line for support to help deal with emotions and discuss options. The number to UNF’s 24-Hour Crisis Helpline is (904) 620-1010.

  • Get proper medical attention. Free forensic medical examinations are available up to 72 hours after the assault.

  • If you suspect that you have been drugged, inform medical personnel immediately.

  • Speak with a victim advocate. They can provide support, assistance and explore your rights and options -- whether or not you decide to report the rape.

  • Contact someone you trust for emotional support.

  • Seek assistance from a counselor.

  • Explore your legal options.

  • Join a support group to share your feelings and begin rebuilding your life.

  • Take care of yourself.
