Many of the challenges of the 21st century will be environmental as humankind tests the carrying capacity of our planet. These environmental issues and problems are by their very nature multidisciplinary, so UNF has adopted a cooperative and integrated approach to understanding our environment and managing resources wisely. The Environmental Center will respond to the pressing need for research relevant to environmental issues, help design thoughtful planning processes, encourage responsible stewardship, and help prepare the next generation of environmentally literate society leaders.
The mission of the Environmental Center is to establish, develop, and
support cross-disciplinary education and research related to the
environment. The Center fosters programs for students, faculty, and
staff to pursue environmental activities through academics, research,
and extracurricular activities. Also, the Center conducts and supports
campus infrastructural projects involving sustainability and the
campus’s natural environment. The Center develops connections and
collaborations among university entities and between the university and

The symposium will bring together residents, government agencies, utilities and innovators in a forum designed to foster an atmosphere of cooperation in environmental achievement. Castaway Island Preserve
The UNF Environmental Center will be assisting the Timucuan Trail Parks Foundation with upkeep to a butterfly garden and trail maintenance at Castaway Island Preserve Friday, July 25 from 9 a.m. to noon. Classes for Kindergartners
Dr. Erin Largo-Wight, UNF associate professor of public health, was recently featured in The Florida Times-Union for her research on outdoor classrooms and their impact on student well-being and learning. The study was paid for by a $4,000 Seed Grant from the UNF Environmental Center. To read more about the study and its results, click here.
