All The School’s A Stage
A Professional Development for Arts Educators (PDAE) Grant
Duval County Public Schools (DCPS) received a $1 million, three-year Professional Development for Art Educators grant from the U.S. Department of Education in October 2008. The Fine Arts Center at the University of North Florida, the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville and the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens were named community partners in the grant and join the DCPS in raising awareness of arts integration and its positive influence on students.
With the “All the School’s a Stage” model, Duval County Public Schools and its partners have expanded its integrated arts practices throughout the district, providing educators with programming that strengthens the capacity of teachers and schools to deliver standards-based arts education and raised student academic achievement in the arts and in other academic subjects.
The PDAE grant affords the opportunity to create an initial nucleus of 45 trained “Arts Integrated Ambassadors” (AIA) in six targeted schools to serve as model leaders/trainers/guest speakers. The goal is to create a “web of excellence” in arts integration by using instructional tools and learning strategies to help students achieve rigorous academic standards. The AIA teachers come from Brentwood, Lake Forest, and M. L. King elementary schools along with Lake Shore, Paxon and Ft. Caroline middle schools. Six additional schools will be added in the third year. Each year, the targeted schools will partner with six new Title 1-level schools to share best practices about arts integration.
