Teaching Online Seminar (TOL6100)

The TOL6100 seminar offers an opportunity for faculty members to redesign a traditional course for distance learning delivery via UNF's Blackboard Learning System. The intensive seminar covers pedagogy, course design, instructional strategies, communication strategies, and online assessment.  Participants examine course objectives and learning activities for the selected course and complete a conversion/redesign process.

 

The  seminar is open to all UNF faculty, and preference is given to:

  • Full-time, tenure-track applicants
  • Courses which are part of programs selected for transition to fully distance-learning delivery
  • Courses that have not been previously delivered via distance learning
  • Applicants who have not previously participated in the seminar

Chair support is required to indicate the department's commitment to offering the course in a fully distance learning mode in the coming academic year. A Distance Learning course is a course in which at least 80 percent of the direct instruction of the course is delivered using some form of technology where the student and instructor are separated by time or space, or both.  For a typical 3 credit-hour course, that is 8 or fewer contact hours during the semester. These courses are designated as campus code "DL" in the UNF course schedule.

Expectations and Course Materials 

  • Faculty member will attend the all TO  sessions, complete all online activities and stay in regular contact with assigned instructional designer.
  • Course will be submitted for review within 90 days of end of seminar using the Quality Matters rubric. 
  • All right, title and interest in and to the course and all materials related thereto are owned jointly by the faculty member and UNF. Upon final acceptance of the course by CIRT, the course will be archived, and a copy will be provided to the faculty member’s academic department for use at UNF’s discretion.  

Participating faculty will receive:

  • $2000 payment upon successful completion of all seminar activities and assignments;
  • $1000 payment upon successful course review;
  • Certification to develop and deliver distance learning courses at UNF.

Seminar Format and Application

Faculty may apply for one of two cohorts that will run during Spring and Summer 2014. The prerequisite course TOL 4100 Blackboard Online Workshop (online) must be completed prior to the start date of the TOL 6100 course Teaching Online Seminar (hybrid), and participants must be available for all days of the seminar and on at least one of the presentation dates. Up to twenty-five participants will be selected for each cohort. Applications are evaluated by CIRT staff in consultation with members of the Distance Learning Committee.  TOL6100 is offered in a hybrid format that includes a face-to-face kickoff meeting and five online modules that include course development activities on the following topics: Distance Learning at UNF, Instructional Design, Communication, Media and Assessment. Throughout the seminar, participants will participate in individual instructional design consultations - including graphic and media development support.  The seminar concludes with face-to-face presentations of course development.

Applications will be due, and acceptance notifications sent out, in the early-mid Fall 2015 semester. Applications may be submitted to Yentl Dunbar in CIRT  (Building 1, Room 1801), or signed and scanned copies may be emailed to cirtlab@unf.edu.
