New Database: Natural Standard

Natural Standard bills itself as the "Authority on Integrative Medicine." The database was founded by healthcare providers and researchers to provide high-quality, evidence-based information about complementary and alternative medicine including dietary supplements and integrative therapies. Grades reflect the level of available scientific data for or against the use of each therapy for a specific medical condition.

Exhibit: Jazz

The exhibit case in the library's entryway features library resources on jazz. The library's collections include more than 5000 music discs, nearly 2000 books, and a major research database, NAXOS Music Library. The exhibit samples a few of those resources.

New Databases

The following databases have been added to the library's resources:

  • eStatement Studies -- The online version of Risk Management Association's Annual Statement Studies, providing financial ratio benchmarks and industry default probabilities and cash flow measures.
  • Films on Demand -- A web-based digital video collection that features thousands of educational films on a multitude of subjects.
  • State Papers Online -- Provides the full text of 16th Century British State Papers.
  • Statistical Abstract of the United States -- The Statistical Abstract provides authoritative data on the social, economic, and political conditions of the United States.
  • VAST -- Access streaming videos on all types of topics including art, architecture, music, history, economics, and more.

e-Libro is the first and only electronic Spanish-language platform devoted to research, with a focus on academic institutions. Database Trial: VAST

Available until 4/26/13.VAST: Academic Video Online is the most comprehensive multidisciplinary streaming video resource on the Web. It brings together thousands of video titles in a wide range of disciplines. With thousands and thousands of complete titles (not clips) and growing by more than 400 titles per month, VAST includes award-winning films from dozens of notable producers and distributors.

VAST covers the following areas and more: art, architecture, business, counseling and therapy, dance, economics, education, ethnic studies, ethnography, gay and lesbian studies, health, history, humanities, law and public safety, literature, opera, philosophy, political science, rehabilitation and sports medicine, feature films* (including contemporary world cinema and silent films), psychology, religion, science, theatre, musical performance, and women’s studies. The range of subjects covered continues to grow.

Database Trial: PsycTESTS

PsycTESTS® is a research database from the American Psychological Association that provides access to psychological tests, measures, scales, surveys, and other assessments as well as descriptive information about the test and its development and administration. Exhibit: Discovering Florida

The large exhibit case just outside Special Collections on the 1st floor of the Library features materials related to the discovery and exploration of Florida and North America. April 2013 is the 500th anniversary of Juan Ponce de Leon's "accidental" discovery of Florida while in search of the "Islands of Benimy."

New Database: Annual Reviews

Since 1932, Annual Reviews has offered comprehensive, timely collections of critical reviews written by leading scientists. Annual Reviews volumes are published each year for 41 focused disciplines within the Biomedical, Life, Physical, and Social Sciences. UNF Library's subscription provides access to the Reviews from 2009 to date. Topic matches from the Reviews are included in OneSearch or the database can be accessed and searched individually.

The ProQuest Statistical Abstract of the United States is the authoritative and comprehensive summary of statistics on the social, political, and economic conditions of the United States. Database Trials -- more

Patai’s Chemistry of Functional Groups - Available until 3/31/13. Patai covers all aspects of the chemistry of functional groups – an essential tool for the organic chemist – including physical organic chemistry, analytical chemistry and techniques, reaction mechanisms, chapters on synthetic pathways, reactions and strategies as well as applications in drug discovery, pharmaceuticals, biochemistry and molecular biology.
Native American Archives - Available until 4/26/13. Whether tracing your heritage or learning about Native American history, original records shed new light on the people and events of the past. Over 1.5 million images available for the first time on the Internet.
National Review Archive - Available until 4/26/13. This database offers complete indexing, abstracting, and full text coverage for all issues of the journal back to the first issue in 1955 through the present.

BioOne now included in OneSearch results

OneSearch now includes BioOne matches in its search results. BioOne provides coverage of high-impact bioscience research journals and features content on a wide variety of today’s most pressing topics, including global warming, stem cell research, and ecological and biodiversity conservation. The database covers over 170 journals with over 100,000 articles online.

Naxos Music Library and Naxos Jazz now searchable in OneSearch

Naxos Music Library is the world´s largest online classical music library. Currently, it offers streaming access to more than 82,210 CDs with more than 1,181,800 tracks. Naxos Music Library Jazz provides online streaming access to jazz CDs from hundreds of artists. The addition of Naxos matches to OneSearch search results means quick and easy access to over 100,000 streaming CDs.

Exhibit: Black History Month

February is Black History Month. Accordingly, the library's entry display case on the 1st floor features library resources related to African American history. Also featured are a poster of famous Black Americans, a copy of Gerald Ford's 1976 proclamation recognizing Black History Month, the text of the 1986 Congressional joint resolution recognizing the month, and President Barack Obama's 2013 Proclamation.

UBorrow Comes to OneSearch

OneSearch now includes a widget that will allow a researcher to search Florida's state university libraries' combined catalog for materials that can be borrowed from other libraries statewide. The widget appears to the right of the search results in OneSearch.

Service Recognition

Five library employees were recently recognized for service milestones at UNF. Recent retirees Verna Urbanski and Cynthia Valentine were recognized for 35 years of service, Bob Farnsworth and Paul Mosley for 25 years, and Tracey Britton for 20 years of service.

The library's main exhibit case in the 1st floor entryway features library resources on Martin Luther King, Jr., renowned civil rights leader and recipient of the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize. The exhibit runs through the month of January.

Exhibit: The Emancipation Proclamation

The large library display case just outside Special Collections on the 1st floor features an exhibit on Abraham Lincoln and the Emancipation Proclamation. Running through February, this exhibit showcases library resources focusing on Abraham Lincoln and the Proclamation.

Library launches new home page

The library's web site features a new start page. Redesigned to place a stronger focus on the library's main search system, OneSearch, and to emphasize the library's engagement with social media, the new home page also more prominently features specialized collections, such as Digital Commons, and library help and instruction.

Exhibit: What's Special About Florida

Running from December 2012 through January 2013, the Special Collections exhibit cases feature Florida materials housed in the library's Special Collections. Included are rare books, maps, and other materials relating to Florida history, geography, business, and culture.

 Available until 11/30/12, this online market research tool monitors industry trends and gives you strategic analysis and a market size and market share database for all your products across all your key countries. Passport is Euromonitor International's global market analysis software platform, which analyzes the industry in countries around the world.

Database Trial: eStatement Studies

 Available until 11/14/12, eStatement Studies is the only source of composite performance metrics derived directly from the financial statements of financial institutions’ borrowers and prospects. These financial statements come directly to Robert Morris Associates (RMA) from its member institutions, which get their data straight from their customers.

This exhibit represents an oral history project conducted by students in Constanza Lopez's Communications and Communities for Speakers of Spanish class in Spring of 2012. Housed in the exhibit case just outside of Special Collections, Voces y Caras runs through October.

Technology Assistance Center

A cooperative effort between the library, ITS, and CIRT, the Center is located at the information desk on the 2nd floor of the library and provides reference and instruction, technological assistance, help with Blackboard, and even laptop troubleshooting. Hours are Monday - Thursday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Running through October, this exhibit features the variety of free programs sponsored by UNF, including Movies on the House, free performances at the Fine Arts Center, and free art exhibits at the campus gallery and MOCA.

New Exhibit in Special Collections

"Two Jacksonville Legends: James Weldon Johnson & Eartha M. M. White," features rare materials from Special Collections relating to White and Johnson. Eartha White was a contemporary and friend of a wide range of prominent artists, authors, social welfare activists, and political leaders. The exhibit features correspondence from Johnson regarding his friend Eartha White, a photograph of his brother, John Rosamund Johnson, and letters from Grace Nail Johnson, widow of James Weldon Johnson. Copies of his notable works, The Autobiography of an Ex-Coloured Man, God's Trombones, and Along This Way, are also on display. The exhibit is open in the Special Collections Reading Room (first floor) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday through July 31, 2012.

Exhibit: Library of America Project

Founded in 1979 with the support of seed money from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Ford Foundation, the Library of America is a nonprofit publishing venture whose objective is to restore and pass on to future generations our nation’s literary heritage. In the years since its inception it has gained recognition by both scholars and the general public as the national edition of our country’s literature. The display runs through the months of June and July and is located in the large display case outside Special Collections on the 1st floor.

This database provides academic authors with information about scholarly/peer-reviewed journals. Impact factors are one of the criteria used to judge an academic journal. JCR reports this information for thousands of journals.

Historic Architectural Photography by Lance Taylor - February 16, 2 p.m.

Lance Taylor, a UNF staff employee and avocational photographer, will talk about his interest in the photography of historic architecture. Taylor, a UNF alumnus (BA 1974, MBA 1986), recently donated to the Library over 7,000 of his photographic images of historical sites in the United States, predominately in Florida and neighboring states. The presentation is part of the current Library exhibit, “Jacksonville Architecture: In Print and Photography.” This event will take place in the Special Collections Reading Room, Thomas G. Carpenter Library, Building 12, first floor on February 16 at 2 p.m. Free and open to the public.

Library Exhibit: Jacksonville Architecture: In Print and Photography

This exhibit features the photography of Lance Taylor, a UNF staff member and avocational photographer. Taylor recently donated to Special Collections over 7,000 of his photographic images of historical sites in the United States. The images on display are integrated with relevant print materials from Special Collections, including historical site applications, postcards, ephemera, and site memorabila. The exhibit is in the Special Collections Reading Room on the first floor and will remain on display from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, until Wednesday, February 29.

New Database Platforms

Three familiar databases are now available through a different publisher and platform.  PsycINFO, PsycARTICLES, and Philosopher's Index have moved to EBSCOhost.  The old platforms will be available through the end of the year.  You can compare the new interfaces by selecting from the A to Z list of research databases.

OneSearch

OneSearch searches all the library's holdings at once.  It searches the library catalog for books, cds, videos, government documents, etc., as well as for articles in most of the library databases.  The results are displayed in one set with options for narrowing several different ways by using facets.

This collection has over 70,000 ebooks from 350 academic publishers.

The major health sciences database CINAHL now includes full text, as does SPORTDiscus. Other new ones include Academic Search Complete, Art and Architecture Complete, Business Source CompleteComputers & Applied Sciences Complete, Education Research Complete, Environment Complete, Humanities International Complete, SocINDEX with Full Text, and Sustainability Watch.

Knowing the Ropes: JAXPORT in the Arts

This exhibit features a unique collection of photographs and printed materials from the Jacksonville Port Authority Gallery. Included are images from two recent JAXPORT displays, Faces of the Port and Women of the Port. The exhibit is in the Special Collections Reading Room on the first floor and will remain on display from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, until Friday, August 12.
