Grants available through the Honors & Scholars Program

The Honors & Scholars Program sponsors a number of competitive grants to award funds to students for a variety of opportunities that will benefit the University by enhancing its reputation as a premier undergraduate institution of higher education. Additionally, there are grants for student scholars and their mentors to support their research efforts, and for faculty in their efforts to improve the quality of intellectual life on campus.

Undergraduate Travel Grants

Undergraduate Travel Grants can be used to pay for travel expenses associated with attending national and international conferences where students present research to professional audiences. Students may also apply for grants for costs associated with internship opportunities or travel abroad trips.

These grants range from $500 to $2500 per year.  Honors students may apply for more than one grant in a semester.  Grants are offered in March (for summer and fall awards) and October (for spring awards) each year. For more information regarding the application process, please contact the Honors Office Manager.

Student Mentored Academic Research Team (S.M.A.R.T.) Grants

S.M.A.R.T. Grants are awarded to undergraduate students and their faculty mentors who are engaged in collaborative scholarly endeavors. For purposes of these grant applications, these scholarly projects are defined broadly. Students in the natural sciences or social sciences may be involved in empirical research, whereas students in the arts and humanities may be involved in producing a portfolio of work. Students in engineering may be involved in a building project, whereas students involved in computing sciences may be involved in writing a computer program. We encourage students from all disciplines to apply for funding.

Over the course of several years, the application process for these grants has become increasingly competitive whereas funding continues to be static. Applicants are therefore strongly encouraged to pay close attention to instructions, address each question thoroughly, and make a compelling argument for both the importance of the scholarship as well as the value for the student of engaging in this scholarship.

Intellectual Life Grants (Faculty only)

Faculty members may apply for funding to support activities and events that increase intellectual opportunities for undergraduate students at UNF. These activities and events may be associated with a class that the faculty member is teaching or they may be extra-curricular.

Some of the activities that have been supported in the past include:

  • Class field trips to cultural or intellectual events
  • Guest lectures
  • Guest performances

The average amount of the awards is $500, although larger amounts have been awarded. Priority is given to activities that benefit large groups of students on campus. Funding can change from year to year.  For more information regarding funding availability, contact the Honors Office Manager.
