The Division of Student Affairs serves a diverse student body by encouraging moral, spiritual, physical and intellectual growth-within a global context.Education is more than what happens in class. As students become involved, try new experiences and learn to be leaders, we encourage and support them, transforming students into the confident, capable individuals who will shape our future. Your gift to Student Affairs supports a myriad of resources for our students. From leadership development and student organizations to study-abroad programs and campus housing, from recreation and fitness to counseling and career services ... these are the experiences that prepare students for full and independent lives. Private support is vital because tuition and state dollars provide only a portion of the funds for programmatic support and facility enhancements needed to continue to provide a full range of student services.
The Vice President’s Fund helps with annual Student Affairs needs like scholarships, extra-curricular programming, and programs to enhance the educational experience of our students.
Funding is needed to expand the Disability Resource Center and enhance its services to students with physical, learning and emotional challenges.A physical place for spiritual growth will help meet the full needs of the campus community. Funding will support the Hidden Lake Project, a planned sanctuary for meditation, relaxation and spiritual reflection. This peaceful site in a beautiful wooded setting will seat up to 250 guests for religious services, student ceremonies, weddings, lectures and musical performances.
The University has tripled the graduation rate of students with disabilities in just three years, and Jacksonville corporations have responded by hiring interns and alumni. Serving approximately 425 students in 2007 alone, the University’s highly successful Disability Resource Center has expanded into a planned 6,000-square-foot annex to better enhance students’ academic success, social growth, career opportunities and independence. The center is designed to maximize privacy and access, and will include assistive technology for those with visual and hearing impairments, strategic instruction and other services. This center will serve students with disabilities by providing note-takers for those with dyslexia and other learning disabilities, sign language interpreters and peer support groups. With its completion, UNF will be the only higher-education institution with such extensive student accommodations in the region. The new Student Union is the hub of campus. Among its many offices and services, the new building houses the Student Government, Student Life offices and services, the UNF Bookstore, a large theater, a restaurant and a food court. It is a gathering place and central information source for all students.Because healthy bodies make for healthy minds, UNF plans to create a new fitness facility called the Student Wellness and Sports Education Center. Students will enjoy expanded fitness space for cardiovascular exercise, group fitness classes, free weights and machines, a rock climbing wall, rooms for aerobics and cycling, as well as additional hardwood playing courts for a variety of recreational sports. UNF is experiencing an unprecedented number of grand opening celebrations on campus. More than a physical transformation, the recent expansion of Student Life facilities reflects and encourages a growing pride and sense of ownership among University of North Florida students. “I always thought I’d move away from Jacksonville after college, but my experience as president of the Student Government has inspired me to run for local office. I served on the University board and the Florida Student Association. I’ve met the state chancellor and was interviewed on NPR. These opportunities and connections are a tribute to UNF!” Rachael TutwilerM.P.A. candidate
