Resources for College Writing

This guide was designed for College Writing instructors and their students at the University of North Florida and aims to identify print and electronic research and writing resources available through the Thomas G. Carpenter Library as well as via the Internet. This is by no means a comprehensive nor an exhaustive list, but rather a very selective guide to some of the numerous available resources.

     -- Search Services --
Google -- The veritable powerhouse of search engines, Google has been lauded for its user-friendly interface, its comprehensive index of Web sites, and its uncanny ability to identify the best results for nearly any topic. In a Web that includes billions of documents, a powerful search engine is a necessity. Google has worked a "one size fits all" approach into a winning solution that helps researchers easily search nearly 3.1 billion publicly available Web pages. Not only does Google provide a logical approach to finding things on the Web, it also allows image searching, filetype searching, newsgroup searching, and searching by specific domain.

Teoma -- The first search service to give Google a run for the money, Teoma boasts "subject referencing" as its key to producing authoritative search results. According to Teoma's Web site, "Teoma provides better results because it goes beyond traditional page ranking methods to determine authority, in addition to relevancy. To determine the authority or quality of a site's content, Teoma uses Subject-Specific Popularity. Subject-Specific Popularity ranks a site based on the number of same-subject pages that reference it, not just general popularity, to determine a site's level of authority." Teoma means "expert" in Gaelic.
Do an expert search now in Teoma:

Yahoo -- Do you Yahoo? So the advertising goes. Yahoo's most notable strength is its human-cataloged directory listings. Yahoo provides much more, including an Internet search based on Google's index of Web pages and commercial links, but it's continuing virtue is its easy to navigate subject-organized directory listings. For a researcher trying to identify a topic of interest represented on the Web, Yahoo makes things simple: browse from general to specific using Yahoo's carefully thought-out subject categories.
